Current Issues
Recent droughts and desertification severely affecting agricultural activities, population distribution, and the economy; overgrazing; soil degradation; deforestation (cia world factbook)
To help the country alleviate theses issues reciproka is doing reforestation, community rain water harvesting/management, and soil regeneration.
Reforestation
The reforestation project is to save edible, medicinal and fruit bearing trees that are a part our ecosystem and that are in the verge of extinction. Replanting and restoring these plants not only will preserve them but will also give more nutritional and medicinal resources to the rural communities.
To do so Reciproka is:
· Getting a list of the native trees on the verge of disappearance, and harvesting their seed for planting and distribution.
· Planting native trees that in the verge of being extinct and also edible, medicinal plants and fruit bearing trees in rural areas.
Each summer Reciproka works with a different village and chooses 3 different kinds of trees to plant. There is usually a fruit bearing tree, a native local tree and moringa trees.
The Moringa Tree
India's ancient tradition of ayurveda says the leaves of the Moringa tree prevent 300 diseases.
Modern science confirms the basic idea.
Scientific research has proven that these humble leaves are in fact a powerhouse of nutritional value.
Gram for gram, Moringa leaves contain:
